History

Point Lonsdale is situated at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The 3.5 kilometre stretch of water across the entrance of the bay to Point Nepean is known as The Rip and is one of the most treacherous stretches of water in Australia.

In 1852 a signal station was established at Point Lonsdale to help guide ships through the heads into Port Phillip Bay. The current lighthouse was built in 1902.

In 1876 the first land sales were made in Point Lonsdale.

Point Lonsdale is surrounded by the beach, farmland and the Point Lonsdale Golf Course which restricts growth of housing in the area. There is a designated green wedge between Point Lonsdale and Ocean Grove. These restrictions to development have kept Point Lonsdale a relatively sleepy beach destination.
